3D Three Layer Interchangeable Crochet Flower
By Casey Pilley, Yarntivity
Can’t you just eat up those pictures you see with the babies and the hats with huge flowers on them? Or that bag with a flower motif that is just too yummy! How about an interchangeable flower that you can make in any color(s) you choose and switch out as you like? Here you go! When I came up with this flower, I wanted a big, frilly flower for a baby hat I was making but I didn’t want to limit mom to just a pink flower. I made the middle just large enough to fit over the button on the hat I made so she can switch out the flowers to better coordinate with the outfits. Big flower – check. Interchangeable – check. And you know what? It is pretty darn easy to make as well!
You can make this with however many layers as you like. At the end of the instructions, I explain how you can do this VERY easily.
STITCHES / ABBREVIATIONS USED:
Ch – Chain-yo, pull through loop
Sl st – Slip Stitch-insert hook into next stitch, yo pull through all loops on hook
Sc – Single Crochet-insert hook into next stitch, yo pull through 2 loops, yo pull through 2 loops
Hdc – Half-double Crochet-yo, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 3 loops
Dc – Double Crochet-yo, insert hook into next stitch, *yo pull through 2 loops* 3 times
Trb – Treble/Triple Crochet-yo twice, insert hook into next stitch, *yo, pull through 2 loops* 4 times
Yo – Yarn Over
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side
- You can use any size hook, gauge is not important. The larger the hook/yarn, the bigger your flower will be. The flower in the picture is approximately 4” wide using an I hook and worsted weight (4) yarn
- This entire flower is worked in rounds
- I have a picture for each step to give you a visual of what it should look like at the end of that round
- There is only one tricky round and it is only tricky the first time you do it, which I provided additional pictures to show you

Depending on the size of button you intend this to go over is how many you chain to start off with. I recommend using atleast a ½” button as the smallest size. This flower may not stay on very well going any smaller.
Some have asked if they can use the Magic Circle on this – of course you can! However it wouldn’t be interchangeable but still cute. I haven’t mastered the Magic Circle yet, I’m still old school

Beginning chain depends on your button:
½” button – ch 4
¾” button – ch 5
1” button – ch 6
You can chain and compare it to your button to determine how many you need. You want it to be a bit smaller than your button so it doesn’t fall off – but big enough to also fit over your button to work properly
Sl st in first chain to make a loop/ring
Round 2 |
Round 3a |
Round 3c |
Round 3b |
Round 4 |
Round 5 WS – *ch 3, sl around post between petals* rep from * behind each petal. Sl st in 1st ch3 space to join (just like in Round 3) ch1, turn (27 ch)
Round 5 |
Round 6 RS – *(sc, hdc, dc, dc, trb, dc, dc, hdc, sc) all in ch 3 space on the back of the petal * rep from * in each ch 3 space behind the petals around. sl st around post of 1st sc to join. (9 petals – 81 st total {18 sc’s, 18 hdc’s, 36 dc’s, 9 trb’s} )
If you would like to add additional layers to your flower, simply repeat Row 3 however add one more chain every couple layers to account for the wider petals Possibilities are endless with this one!! Thank you so much for your interest in my pattern. I hope you enjoyed making it! Be sure to post your pictures on Ravelry so we can see your Yarntivity shine!!!
